Beloved by all who entered his sphere, Leon Morgenstern, MD, was treasured as a brilliant surgeon and generous mentor. He presided over Cedars-Sinai’s Department of Surgery during a time of sweeping change and put the Medical Center on the map, internationally, as a surgical leader. He personally conducted seminal research on splenic surgery that revolutionized his field.
An accomplished medical historian and humanist, Dr. Morgenstern established Cedars-Sinai’s Center for Healthcare Ethics. He guided colleagues and friends with an abundance of compassion and an unfailing moral compass. His ample legacy includes annual recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Medical Center, and an original mural, Jewish Contributions to Medicine: A work of art and history.
Gifts made in memory of Dr. Morgenstern will be directed to a newly created Lectureship, the Leon Morgenstern, MD, Memorial Lecture in History, Ethics and Medicine. The yearly Morgenstern Lecture will bring a nationally recognized scholar in the history and ethics of medicine to Cedars-Sinai. Through this Lectureship, Dr. Morgenstern’s vision and impeccable standards will be etched into the annals of medicine and the culture of Cedars-Sinai for decades to come.
