In Memory of Vinay Sundaram, MD, MSc (1978-2022)

Vinay Sundaram, MC, MSc, was an active faculty member at the Cedars-Sinai Karsh Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and at the Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Transplant Center for nine years.

He received his medical degree from New York University Grossman School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency training at the University of Virginia. He went on to complete a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also received his master of science in clinical research degree.

He completed his formal medical training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, with a transplant hepatology fellowship. Upon completion of his training, he worked as a clinical instructor at Beth Israel Deaconess and Harvard Medical School, and then served as assistant professor at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

In 2013, Cedars-Sinai was incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Sundaram join the Hepatology faculty.

Dr. Sundaram was an accomplished physician-scientist and a fierce advocate, clinician and researcher for patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). He published more than 100 articles addressing equal access for ACLF patients on transplant waiting lists and strove to provide clear guidance on patient selection and defining limits of transplantation.

He held leadership roles in multiple professional societies, including serving as chair of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Membership and Mentorship Committee and as chair of the AASLD Clinical Practice SIG Education Subcommittee. He also served on the UNOS Membership and Professional Standards Committee, was a member of the Chronic Liver Disease Foundation Board of Advisors, and served on the Medical Advisory Committee for the American Liver Foundation.

As an associate professor of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai and associate professor of Clinical Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Dr. Sundaram was also passionate about medical education and was instrumental in the creation of the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at Cedars-Sinai.

Dr. Sundaram was a highly esteemed, one-of-a-kind faculty member at Cedars-Sinai who was a critical thought leader in ACLF and transplant hepatology. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues, who will never forget his hard work and loyalty to his field and how he changed it for the better. His patients will miss him dearly, never forgetting his dedication and commitment to their health and healing.

In a final act of devotion to patients and to the field of transplantation which he loved, Dr. Sundaram saved multiple lives by donating his organs. He will always be remembered.
