Fashion Industries Guild

Founded: 1956

Who we are: Designers, manufacturers and sales professionals who make the fashion industry an economic and cultural powerhouse in Los Angeles and beyond.

Our purpose: We started by raising funds for capital needs — from state-of-the-art equipment to new construction for rehabilitation facilities and conference centers. For the past two decades, we have put healthcare for children front and center.

Accomplishments: Construction of the Kenny Weinbaum Fashion Industries Guild Pediatric Acute Care Unit was completed in 2012. The unit serves children who do not need treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), but need more care than that provided on the regular hospital floor. This is the first pediatric acute care unit in a medical center west of the Mississippi.

What’s next: The Fashion Industries Guild Congenital Heart Laboratory and Hal Kaltman Fashion Industries Guild Congenital Heart Research Endowment are addressing congenital heart defects (the most common type of birth defect nationwide), affecting nearly one percent of U.S. births each year. Medical advances have dramatically prolonged survival for these children, and the Cedars-Sinai Department of Pediatrics, along with the Heart Institute, is working to improve outcomes even further into adulthood. We hope that by improving our capabilities to care for children with congenital heart disease, the need for open heart surgeries at each stage of life might be eliminated. Support for the Laboratory and Research Endowment will advance the study of congenital heart disease and develop more minimally invasive treatments for patients from fetal to advanced age.
