Founded: 1986
Who we are: For more than a quarter century, volunteers from the worlds of sports, entertainment, business, law, and civic life have produced an inspirational annual event that honors athletes such as David Beckham, Lindsey Vonn and Kobe Bryant, while raising funds to solve some of the more challenging mysteries of human health.
Our purpose: Our mission is to support the Sports Spectacular Diabetes and Obesity Wellness and Research Center at Cedars-Sinai in order to increase resources for children and adults battling diabetes and obesity. In addition, each year, the Sports Spectacular Fellowship Endowment provides five deserving physician-scientists the opportunity to develop clinical and research skills in an immersive community of knowledge that includes mentoring from Cedars-Sinai faculty.
Accomplishments: Researchers at Cedars-Sinai have developed a new approach for the assessment of metabolic status, and also developed the Disposition Index, the most powerful predictor of the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Other areas of study include exploring the mechanisms of insulin resistance, the consequences of abdominal obesity and the use of mathematical modeling to predict the risk of diabetes. Sports Spectacular has also provided critical support for the Cedars-Sinai Medical Genetics Institute to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of genetic disorders.
What’s next: The Sports Spectacular Diabetes and Obesity Wellness and Research Center will develop new ways to predict, prevent, treat and cure diabetes and obesity. These serious medical conditions are so closely linked they are sometimes referred to as "diabesity," and can lead to other life-threatening illnesses such as heart disease and stroke, kidney disease and nervous system damage.
